How to estimate drywall

Drywall is counted in sheets, and the finishing materials follow from the total square footage. A standard drywall sheet is 4 × 8 feet, covering 32 square feet, while a longer 4 × 12 sheet covers 48 square feet. To size a room, add the wall area to the ceiling area, then divide by whichever sheet you plan to hang and round up to whole sheets.

Wall area is the perimeter, 2 × (length + width), multiplied by the ceiling height; the ceiling itself adds length × width on top. The calculator does not subtract for doors and windows — that overage covers cut waste and damaged pieces, which keeps you from coming up short on a delivery.

Worked example: a 12 × 12 room with a 9 ft ceiling

For a 12 ft × 12 ft room with a 9 ft ceiling: the walls are 2 × (12 + 12) × 9 = 432 sq ft, and the ceiling adds 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft, for 576 square feet total. Dividing by the 32 sq ft a 4 × 8 sheet covers gives 576 ÷ 32 = 18 sheets. The finishing materials follow: about 576 × 0.05 = 29 lb of joint compound, roughly 576 screws, and 576 × 0.5 = 288 feet of tape.

Picking a sheet size

The 4 × 8 sheet is the easiest to carry and the default for most rooms. On long walls and ceilings, a 4 × 12 sheet covers 48 sq ft and leaves fewer butt joints to tape and finish, though it is heavier and awkward to hang solo.
